Chapter Seven
Molly
âI heard you scream at Alex. What happened?â Suze asks when I plunk beside her on a log. In front of us, the bonfire rages. Some kids are setting marshmallows on fire and running up and down the beach with flaming sticks.
My gaze sweeps over the partygoers. âIs he still here? Iâm not actually done screaming at him.â
She puts a hand on my arm. âWhoa there. Maybe you should cool off.â
âIs he here?â I repeat crisply.
Suze sighs and jerks her thumb toward the parking lot. âA couple of seniors rocked up in their tricked-out cars. Alex went that way along with half the other boys to kick tires or get high on fumes or something.â
A revving engine punctuates her words. I make a move to stand, but Suze pulls me down. âHey! I was only going to get a drink.â
âNo, you werenât,â she says, rolling her eyes. âYou were going on the hunt for Alex. Stay with me a while. Youâre my date tonight, remember?â
Heaving a sigh, I say, âFine, but donât expect me to make out with you.â
She throws her head back and laughs. âItâs okay. I know youâre saving yourself for someone else.â
âWhat are you talking about?â
Suze offers me a chip, then digs into the bag. âNot what. Who. Alex. Youâve conveniently avoided admitting you liked him.â
âIs all that processed cheese affecting your brain?â I point at the Cheetos sheâs stuffing into her mouth.
âStop lying to me. No, better yet, stop lying to yourself.â Suze dusts off her hands. âYou, my friend, should no longer deny your total, raging crush on Alex Gibson. Youâll be a lot less grumpy if you just say it.â
I squeak in protest.
âDonât pretend for my sake. My thing with Alex... Well, you canât even call it a thing because nothing happened between us. So donât even think of telling yourself heâs off limits.â
âSuze, youâve got it all wrongââ
âNope, not this time.â She holds up an orange-stained palm. âLife is short. Girl, if you want him, go after him!â
âBut I donât want him!â
âRiiiight. You only talk about him 24/7.â
I wince. So Iâm a broken record. That must be beyond boring for everyone else. It's a wonder Suze sticks by me. âIâm not that bad, am I?â
With a laugh, she says, âYou are that bad. But itâs adorable. You two are adorable together, and you obviously care a lot about him.â
I gaze at the crackling fire. The flames reach ever higher toward the stars. âI donât want things to change between me and Alex.â
âThey wonât have to. Well, some things will, and for the better.â She nudges me. âIâm sure youâll have fun making out with him.â
A strange feeling buzzes around my stomach. Kissing Alex. Feeling his arms around me. The thought of being close to himâphysicallyâisnât that foreign. Or as gross as the thought of kissing Jared Christie over there chugging beer. Itâs pretty clear to anyone who gets close to Jared that he doesnât brush his teeth and often wears the same T-shirt two weeks running.
